Navajo rugs, blankets and weavings
from sheep to rugs - Loom tools - page 3 of 3

Additional supplies and tools

The Navajo weaver also needs 3 large dowels, 2 smaller dowels, at least three battens of different widths, at least two combs or forks, and several sack needles.

Three 1" dowels or broomsticks 36" long are used to mount the warp on the loom. The broomsticks or dowels need to be as long as the loom is wide so they can hold the weaving in front of the loom frame.

Two smaller dowels, 1/4" dowels or willow sticks 22" long are needed for the shed rods. These two sticks help you manipulate the warps during weaving.

The batten is one of the basic weaving tools. This flat and wide tool is used to separate warp sets and allow passage of a weft through. It is made of hardwood, since it has much interaction with the tight warp threads. Each batten is designed with a slight curve on the front end, which aids in its insertion between the warp threads. Battens are sanded and polished smooth, so as not to catch the warp threads.

The weaving comb or fork is another essential tool, and is used to beat the weft into position. Weaving forks are fashioned from hard wood, a universal size measures about 2" x 1/2" x 12", and tines 1/4" wide.

Sack needles are heavy curved needles flattened at the pointed end, and used at the end of the weaving when inserting the weft becomes difficult, 5" is a popular size.

It is not necessary to put a finish on your loom or tools unless you prefer it that way. It is best that the larger dowels not be too smooth. The cords stay put better if they aren't. As you work with the combs and battens, they will develop a smooth surface from the constant handling and contact with the wool yarns.
